I’ve always like the sound of Boston, every since their debut album back in 1976.
Prior to the release of their hugely successful first album (I call it an album because there was no CD/DVD back then) I recall hearing a buzz about this band of studio musicians who were getting ready to release a record that was going to blow me and everyone else away. (Mind you I was just a teen-age kid, but I’d already been caught by the music bug with the Osmond Brothers, Stevie Wonder, and Elton John.) And boy did that album ROCK!
Anyhow, I never got to see the original lineup of musicians but always wanted to see Boston live. Well, in 2008 I had the opportunity to photograph one of their show in Washington State so I jumped at the privilege of being able to do so.
As I was in the pit area for photographers, I was reminiscing and singing the Boston songs in my head. Not knowing who the lineup was, other than this guy named Tommy DeCarlo who was supposed to sound like Brad Delp. So as I got settled and ready to shoot, the band came out on stage and I had to do a double take. “What, a female bass player… I’m bummed,” is what I thought. Then I looked to stage right and my jaw dropped. I’ve been ripped off, I’ve seen that guy before, he’s from the Stryper! But then the music started…
Holy crap, not only did DeCarlo sound really good, Michael Sweet of Stryper was great. And then there was that bass player! Not only was Kimberley Dahme as strikingly attractive woman, but she had the bass chops to go right along with her looks. I was now captivated by her, the band, and time. Yup, I say time because every few moments I’d close my eyes behind my camera and think of days gone past, and all the great memories the songs from Boston brought back.
I can’t wait for these guys to go on tour again!
