When the day started, it wasn’t looking like summer. A little drizzle, and a lot of clouds.
I was worried that the outdoor concert with the Beach Boys was going to be a wet one, but somehow the clouds parted, and the sun came out and everything was just fine.
The show on Sunday night had a very special meaning to a group of people who attended in memory of a loved one. Jessica Joseph, President and Founder of Red Sky Agency was kind enough to provide the family members with tickets to enjoy the show.
Anyhow, about the Beach Boys; I can sum it up in one word; unbelievable!
Can we really call them the Beach Boys with only one member left touring? Mike Love has certainly carried the Beach Boys name for decades, and I was; let me say that again, was wondering if this show would be any good. Yep, like said above, it was unbelievable.
Not only was I impressed with all the members musical abilities, but the vocals of guitar player Scott Totten and drummer John Cowsill. These two added a special something on cover tunes that the band performed. I’d heard a handful of people in the past say that they heard the Beach Boys and didn’t think the harmonies were any good, but they were spot-on!
What’s interesting with music over the years is that in the 60’s there was a definite formula to writing a hit song and the play time was from 2 1/2 minutes to 3 1/2 minutes in length instead of the epic lengths that you heard later on.
So, imagine if your songs are only three minutes long and you had to entertain a crowd for two-and-a-half hours; that’s a lot of songs. I couldn’t believe that hit after hit tunes that the Beach Boys played let alone how many of them I remembered as a kid growing up. I was wearing a smile from ear-to-ear and filled with memories of growing up playing in my own junkyard band banging on garbage can lids and mufflers.
How many songs can you sing about that have something to do with cars or surfing? I don’t know, but the Beach Boys probably have that market cornered.
If you’re anywhere in your 40’s or older, go see them. If you want to have a fun time and hear what all the rave was about in the 60’s – 70’s go see’m, you can’t go wrong.
I’ll post some photos very soon.
